Quick answer

Brazil digital nomad visa requirements in 2026

  • Remote work must be for foreign employer, foreign clients, or foreign business activity, with no employment relationship in Brazil.
  • Core threshold is foreign income of at least US$1,500 per month or at least US$18,000 in bank funds.
  • You can apply abroad through Brazilian consulate or, if already in Brazil, request residence authorization through MigranteWeb.
  • Initial residence period is up to one year, with renewal for equal period when requirements still hold.
  • After approval, CRNM registration timing matters: 90 days after entry for visa holders, 30 days after publication for in-country approvals.
  • Tax residence is separate from immigration status: temporary-visa foreigners stay non-resident through 183 days and become resident on day 184 in the 12-month count.

Answer all five questions

Once all fields are selected, this box will tell you whether digital nomad route looks like fit, short visitor stay may be enough, or deeper review is safer.

Decision path

Do you need Brazil's digital nomad route?

Start with fit, not with visa name. Brazil allows short visitor stays for some digital nomad situations, but longer stays or formal residence planning usually point back to Resolution No. 45/2021 requirements and registration duties. [1][3][4]

Wrong route costs time. If your work will be tied to Brazilian employer or Brazilian local labor activity, digital nomad route is wrong frame from start. [1]

You may not need digital nomad route yet

For stays up to 90 days, Brazil's own practical guide says digital nomads can enter as visitors, subject to nationality-specific visitor rules. [3]

Use visitor path only when stay is short and activity remains remote for foreign source.

Digital nomad route usually fits

Best fit when work is remote, foreign-sourced, threshold is documented, and you want more than short visitor stay or want residence status with CRNM follow-through. [1][2][3]

Choose consular filing abroad or MigranteWeb filing inside Brazil based on location and timing.

Wrong route warning

If you will work for Brazilian employer or your activity is really local work in Brazil, Resolution No. 45/2021 says digital nomad route is not right category. [1]

Review work, entrepreneur, family, or other residence options instead of forcing digital nomad label.

Documents strategy

Requirement-to-proof matrix

Weak applications usually fail because proof package does not clearly connect legal rule to document. Build both together.

RequirementWhy it mattersWhat proves it
Remote work using information and communication technology [1]This is core legal definition of digital nomad under Brazilian rule.Applicant declaration confirming remote work capacity; remote-work explanation; supporting workflow evidence if useful.
Foreign employer or foreign client relationship [1]Route is for foreigners without employment relationship in Brazil.Employment contract, service contract, client agreements, company documents, or other records tying work to foreign source.
No Brazilian employment relationship [1]Brazilian employment relationship points away from this route.Clean contract package showing foreign payer, foreign entity, and no Brazilian employer on record.
Foreign-source means of subsistence [1]Applicant must prove financial self-support from abroad.Bank statements, salary records, invoices, recurring deposits, platform statements, or company revenue records tied to foreign source.
At least US$1,500/month or US$18,000 in bank funds [1]This is explicit threshold in Resolution No. 45/2021.Monthly income records or bank statements showing minimum funds route.
Identity, travel, and criminal-record documents [1][3]Consular and in-country filings both require identity and background documentation.Passport, criminal background certificates, and in-country supporting civil documents such as proof of filiation when needed.

Filing route

Apply from abroad vs inside Brazil

Same legal rule. Different filing channels, document emphasis, and timing risk.

FactorApply from abroadApply inside Brazil
Where process starts [2][3]Brazilian consulate responsible for your jurisdiction.MigranteWeb residence-authorization filing with Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
Core filing frame [1][2][3]You request temporary visa first, then enter Brazil and complete registration. You request temporary residence authorization while already in Brazil.
Documents highlighted by official guidance [1][3]Passport, health insurance valid in Brazil, consular fee proof, visa form, criminal record, digital nomad proof.Residence application form, passport, proof of filiation if needed, GRU fee, criminal records for prior five years, no-record declaration, digital nomad proof.
Best when [2][3]You are outside Brazil, want visa in hand before travel, or need consular certainty first. You are already in Brazil lawfully and can assemble apostilles, translations, and uploads without overstay risk.
Registration deadline after approval [3][4]Register with Federal Police within 90 days after entry in Brazil.Register with Federal Police within 30 days after publication of approval.

After approval

What happens after approval?

Approval is not finish line. Registration, CPF, and first practical steps decide whether move actually works.

Register and get RNM / CRNM

Registration is not optional. Federal Police registration gives you RNM number and CRNM card, and official service page states 90-day deadline after entry for temporary-visa holders and 30-day deadline after publication for residence approvals in Brazil. [4]

Get CPF early

CPF is separate from immigration status, but Receita service says foreigners, including non-residents, can register. In practice it helps with leases, banking, and daily setup. [6]

Line up first-week admin

After CRNM/CPF sequencing is clear, line up housing, banking, telecom, and anything else that depends on Brazilian identification.

Track renewal early

Digital nomad residence starts up to one year and can be renewed for equal period, so do not wait until last minute to rebuild proof pack. [1]

Tax warning

Visa approval does not freeze your tax status

Receita Federal treats temporary-visa foreigners as non-residents while they remain up to 183 days, consecutive or not, in 12-month period. Residence starts on date they complete 184 days, unless another earlier resident trigger applies. [5]

That means immigration-compliant stay can still become Brazilian tax residence later. Plan before day-count drifts, not after.

Reality check

Does this help with permanent residency?

Not automatically. Practical inference, not separate statutory promise: Resolution No. 45/2021 creates temporary residence up to one year, renewable for equal period, so digital nomad status should be treated as temporary legal bridge rather than automatic permanent-residence machine. [1]

If permanent residency is your real goal, use this route only as short-term status while you evaluate family, work, investment, retirement, or other long-term options that match your facts.

FAQ

Brazil digital nomad visa requirements FAQ

What are Brazil digital nomad visa requirements in 2026?

Core rules remain same ones anchored in Resolution No. 45/2021: remote work for foreign employer or clients, no Brazilian employment relationship, and proof of either US$1,500 monthly foreign income or US$18,000 in bank funds. [1]

Can I apply from inside Brazil?

Yes. Official digital nomad guidance says people already in Brazil may request residence authorization directly through immigration system and MigranteWeb. [2][3]

Do I need health insurance?

For consular filing, yes: Article 3 of Resolution No. 45/2021 and practical government guide list health insurance valid in Brazil among required consular documents. [1][3]

What happens after approval?

You still need Federal Police registration so Brazil can issue RNM number and CRNM. Deadline is 90 days after entry for visa holders or 30 days after approval publication for in-country approvals. [3][4]

Does digital nomad status make me Brazilian tax resident automatically?

Not automatically. Receita says temporary-visa foreigners are non-residents while they remain up to 183 days in 12 months, and become residents on date they complete 184 days unless another resident-trigger happens sooner. [5]

Does this route give permanent residency?

Not by itself. Practical inference from official temporary-status rules: Resolution No. 45/2021 gives temporary residence up to one year, renewable for equal period, so permanent residence needs separate long-term strategy rather than automatic conversion promise. [1]
